An export is not always
a working website.
These platforms have different portability boundaries. The useful question is what your next provider can actually use, and which services still need to work after the move.
Wix
A Wix site depends on Wix hosting. Taking your content and domain elsewhere is different from exporting the working Wix website.
- What to retain or check
- Retain the content and assets you have rights to use. Record important page addresses and check exports separately for each service.
- What needs a separate plan
- A replacement outside Wix needs its own design, implementation and working services. Do not treat domain pointing as moving the Wix site.
Squarespace
Squarespace exports certain content in XML for WordPress import. That file is not a copy of the design or a complete working website.
- What to retain or check
- Review the actual export against the site inventory. The export supports one blog; retain excluded content, images and downloads separately.
- What needs a separate plan
- Style settings, custom CSS and several page or block types are excluded. Plan the visual rebuild and confirm each function separately.
Webflow
Eligible paid Workspace plans can export site code. A Site plan alone does not give code-export access, and static files are not all the site’s services.
- What to retain or check
- Check the Workspace export entitlement and inspect the files received. Inventory CMS content and other data separately from the code.
- What needs a separate plan
- Exported code does not retain working CMS, ecommerce, native form processing, search, localized content or password protection. Each needed service needs an agreed replacement.
Guidance reviewed 27 September 2026. Check the current provider documentation and your own plan or agreement before acting. For WordPress, distinguish a content export, a complete backup and the editing arrangement. Other platforms need the same practical questions answered without borrowing another platform’s export rules.

If the platform still suits the team’s editing and integrated services, improving the existing site can be a sensible option. A new visual design does not automatically require a new platform.
Compare the same outcome
Ask what each proposal includes: writing, design, content transfer, editing, integrations, launch checks and ongoing work. A software subscription and a complete replacement project are different purchases.

Questions before you switch.
Can I keep my domain when I change website platform?
Often the website can change while the domain stays under the same ownership. Domain registration, DNS, hosting and email are separate responsibilities. Confirm the actual setup and who is authorized to change it. A Wix-managed domain can point to an external website; that does not export the Wix-built site.
Does the planner check my website or accounts?
No. It uses the choices you enter on this page. It does not visit your URL, connect to a platform account, inspect an export, test a form or verify your access. Unknown choices become questions in the brief.
Are the downloads gated?
No. Download the complete Markdown brief and CSV action list without an account or email address. The CSV works as a task record in spreadsheet software. Keep the full brief for the platform context, sources and unresolved decisions.
Will moving platform improve speed or search visibility?
A platform name does not establish the performance or search quality of a particular website. Evaluate the actual implementation, content, hosting and third-party services. A replacement also needs a careful URL and launch plan; rankings and enquiries cannot be guaranteed.
Can I cancel the old platform once I have an export?
An export alone does not show that the replacement works or contains everything needed. Retain the old service until the responsible people have verified the replacement, the domain and email changes, required data and content, redirects and the agreed rollback arrangement.
